Activities:
Discuss the word “problem”. Work together to create your own definition of the word. One example might be “something you must figure out”. Also, you can relate this to “math problems”.
Discuss the word “solution”. You can also relate this term to math- how one “solves” the math problem, and the answer to a math problem is called a “solution”.
Also introduce the terms “conflict” and “resolution”. Discuss how problem and solution are interchangeable with these terms.
Play “Problem and Solution Match”. You can do this like memory, or just have all cards face up for an easier version. Place math cards with problems and cards with solutions. Work to match each problem with its solution. I put all the problems on one color card and solutions on another color to make the game easier to sort visually.
Relate problem and solution to a story- the characters have a problem to solve, and then it typically is resolved at the end of the story.
Sing the “Problem and Solution Song”

Do you think it is wise for them to take the game home?
What animals appeared in their home?
Why are Judy and Peter excited to work the puzzle after playing the game?
Do you think Judy and Peter will take something that belongs to them in the future?
Why are instructions important?
What do you think will happen to Walter and Danny?
